Freegate is one of the best proxy tools that I've ever used. It assures 100% anonymity and safety for your internet browsing. It is developed as an anti-censorship software by Dynamic Internet Technology Inc. (DIT). It mainly aims at giving internet freedom to Chinese users, so it provides in-built settings and extra options that are helpful for Chinese users. However, it will work for users from other countries also.

Interface

Freegate comes with a simple interface with one start screen and main UI with four tabs. In the first tab, it will display the graph of data usage and connection strength to their servers. In the next tab you can see the connection status and button to disconnect proxy whenever you want. In the next two tabs you can change the program settings.

Portability

One of the main attraction of Freegate is it's portability. It is available as a small portable zip file of 2.3 MB, so no need to install or change any settings in your system . You can enter into the anonymous world within two clicks.

Connectivity and Speed

Unlike many other proxy tools, it will take only 2 to 5 seconds to connect to their server. It is very much fast and you will not feel that you are browsing through a proxy. Freegate is using anonymous proxy, so sites will not detect the country from which you are surfing. But the downloading speed is not up to mark. Freegate mainly aims for internet browsing. It is not suitable for downloading files. Also it will not work with torrent clients (at least in my case), so you cannot download any torrent with it.

Freegate is tunneling through ports other than 8080 (normal HTTP port), so that it is accessible in most restricted networks. There is an option for wireless or unstable network. If you enable that option it will not disconnect suddenly when your network is gone. So it is the best option for wifi users.

Two tunnels are available; A tunnel and F tunnel. Both are fast but you can try and find which one is more faster in your location. In my case, I am using F tunnel. I feel it is little more better. You can set your own browser (default is Internet Explorer) from the settings tab to browse using it.

Extras

You can change the window title and even the system tray icon to hide this tool from others while you are using it. You can set it to automatically close the Internet Explorer and clear history when the program exit.

Conclusion

In my opinion, it is the best free proxy tool that you can find in the internet. It works better than many other paid tools and proxy services that are available in the market. It assures you 100% anonymity and freedom. And it will not make any changes in your system or it will not alter your network connectivity settings.

My review:

Designed by DIT, Freegate is an application which allows the user to view some websites which have been blocked or invalidated by their governments, by installing a proxy server which is outside the control of these countries. This application is used in countries such as China and Iran in order to access Western websites which have been blocked by politicians, allowing those behind the curtain to participate in modern debates and to educate themselves. Connected to Dynaweb, Freegate is only one of a number of anti-censorship applications and services provided by DIT. The website states that Freegate can be used to access overseas websites as quickly as those in the local area, which needs no changes of the system, and operates as a single file when downloaded onto a Windows platform.

The download of Freegate was relatively easy, although at the end of the installation sequence it did offer me a list of choices, including viewing websites outside of China, or only allowing those websites approved by the censors. This seems to be directly opposed to the anti-censorship pose of the creators, but the choice was available if the user had wanted to take it. Aside from this box, no real decision making on the reviewer's part was required, and the download was completed quickly and easily.

Once the installation was complete Freegate opened in a separate window, looking very much like the server box for internet connections displayed by windows. This made it easy for the viewer to understand what was going on when it is opening up the server in order to contact the proxy. As the server connects you may find that you are asked to look for updates for all types of software in the Dynaweb range, although you can simply cancel this request. Once the proxy server is opened, you can then arrange the settings so that you are instantly connected to this software when you log on, or prevent it opening up when you start the program.

The Freegate software is easy to download and use wherever you are in the world, and as more and more people struggle against oppression and censorship, it is likely that Freegate and other anti-censorship software will become increasingly popular. This is a useful tool if you want to use a proxy server for any reason.

Pros:

  • + Connects to proxy servers
  • + Allows you to view websites banned by government sensors
  • + Easy download
  • + Easy user interface

Cons:

  • - Has significantly reduced the countries served by this software
  • - Operates like a trojan horse, may be deleted by anti-virus software
